Subitizing

Hi friends,
Today in Second Grade we are working on our fact fluency and number sense!
One of the many ways we do this is by SUBITIZING!

Subitizing is the ability to see objects and know the number without counting. It is most commonly practiced with dice as the formations of the dots can be memorized in order to easily recognize the number. You can also subitize with other objects such as ten frames, base ten blocks, and pictures.

Over the last few years, I have begun to implement this practice DAILY in my classroom and have found tremendous progress in students fact fluency and basic number sense. Subitizing trains the mind to see numbers and understand them better. It's also quick, easy, and so much fun!

When we begin our math period, we always practice and review some important basic skills like: skip counting, counting on, math facts (especially doubles, doubles +1, doubles -1, etc...), and of course SUBITIZING! The daily practice really helps. I like to start off with DICE and later on we move on to tally marks, base ten blocks, and ten frames. I also have a mixed pack!

Sometimes we simply call out the answers as the slide appears on the interactive board, other times we fill out a recording sheet. I also allow students to use these games on the tablets and computer. It's a great activity to do for early finishers. And for those who struggles with math, I send the file home on a USB key for parents to practice with them too.
